Why the Grading System Changed

The old A*-G scale was introduced in 1988 and had one problem. Too many strong students clustered at A*, and there was no way to distinguish the very best from the merely excellent. Universities and sixth forms wanted more headroom at the top.

The 9-1 scale was designed to fix that. It stretches the top three old grades (A*, A, B) into four new grades (9, 8, 7, and part of 6), which spreads out the highest achievers and rewards genuine excellence. The rest of the scale compresses slightly, which is why grade boundaries at the bottom can feel unfamiliar too.

Maths and English were graded on the new scale first in 2017. Most other subjects followed in 2018, and by 2019 the whole of GCSE was on 9-1. Vocational qualifications and a small number of legacy subjects still use letter grades, but for mainstream GCSEs the numbers are now the standard.

What Each Grade Actually Means

Here is the practical translation, grade by grade, with the old-scale equivalent alongside it.

  • Grade 9 sits above the old A*. It is awarded to roughly the top 4-5% of all entries in England each year and signals exceptional performance. It is a new grade, not a renamed A*.

  • Grade 8 is broadly equivalent to a low A* or high A. Genuine top-set performance.

  • Grade 7 aligns with a solid A. This is the threshold most sixth forms use for A-level entry into the subject at higher level, particularly for Maths, Sciences, and Further Maths.

  • Grade 6 covers the old high B. A strong, university-ready grade in the subject.

  • Grade 5 is what the Department for Education calls a "strong pass." Roughly a high C or low B on the old scale. This is the threshold many colleges and employers now use.

  • Grade 4 is a "standard pass." Broadly a low C. A student holding a 4 in English and Maths has met the minimum government benchmark.

  • Grade 3 is a low D or high E. Below the pass threshold, and typically triggers a resit in English and Maths.

  • Grade 2 is a low E or F.

  • Grade 1 is the lowest awarded grade, equivalent to a G.

  • U stands for ungraded and is not counted as a pass.

Two things worth flagging. Grade 5 is where the "standard pass" and "strong pass" language creates the most confusion at parents' evenings, and grade 7 is where the old A / A* boundary now sits.

Grade Boundaries: How the Marks Become Grades

This is the part most parents have never had explained. Grade boundaries are not fixed in advance. Exam boards publish them on results day, after every paper has been sat and marked.

The reason is fairness. If a paper is harder than usual, the mark total needed for a grade 7 will be lower that year. If a paper is easier, the boundary moves up. This keeps the meaning of a grade 7 broadly consistent from one year to the next, even when the papers vary in difficulty.

An example makes it clearer. On AQA Higher Maths in 2023, a grade 9 needed around 208 out of 240. In 2024 the boundary was around 199. Same qualification, same grade, different mark total, because the papers were not identically difficult.

What this means for your child in practice:

  • Boundaries are published on results day. You cannot know the exact mark total needed until the papers have been sat.

  • Mock exam boundaries are usually the previous year's real boundaries. Schools use them as a proxy, which is a sensible working estimate but not a guarantee.

  • A few marks either side of a boundary can move a grade. This is why exam technique matters as much as content knowledge. Method marks, follow-through marks, and clean working can push a borderline paper into the next grade.

If your child's mock came back at a low 6, they are not stuck at a 6. They are in reach of a 7 with a handful of well-earned marks. The reverse is also true, which is why mocks are worth treating seriously.

Combined Science vs Triple Science: The Grade Format is Different

This is a common source of confusion, so it is worth being explicit.

  • Triple Science (also called Separate Science) awards three separate GCSEs: Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. Each has its own single grade, from 9 to 1. A strong Triple Science student might come home with 9-8-8, or 7-7-6.

  • Combined Science (also called Trilogy or Double Award) covers the same three subjects but awards two GCSEs based on the overall performance. The result is a double number: 9-9, 8-8, 7-6, and so on. The two digits can differ by one grade at most.

Neither route is inherently better. Triple Science covers more content and is often the preferred choice for students aiming at A-level Sciences or medicine, engineering, and computer science degrees. Combined Science is a lighter load and works for students who are strong overall but not planning to specialise in Science.

Which Grades Actually Matter for What

The numbers are meaningful in context. Here is what different thresholds unlock.

  • Grade 4 in English and Maths. The minimum benchmark for most college courses, apprenticeships, and many entry-level jobs. Without a 4, students typically have to resit.

  • Grade 5 in English and Maths. The threshold for many competitive college courses and increasingly used by employers and university foundation routes.

  • Grade 6. A strong sixth-form entry grade, and a common minimum for A-level in that subject at less selective schools.

  • Grade 7. The threshold most selective sixth forms use for A-level entry into the subject, particularly for Maths, Sciences, Further Maths, and Economics. Russell Group universities looking at GCSE profiles want to see 7s and above in relevant subjects.

  • Grade 8 and 9. These separate strong candidates from exceptional ones. For competitive courses (Medicine, Dentistry, Oxbridge, top engineering) the profile universities look for is a run of 8s and 9s across the sciences and maths, not just one standout grade.

The pattern most sixth forms follow: 6 in the subject to study it at A-level; 7 in the subject if the school is selective or the subject is Maths or a Science. Always check the specific school's published entry policy, because they do vary.

Reading a School Report: What the Numbers Are Telling You

Most school reports show three things: current working grade, predicted final grade, and target grade. They are not the same thing, and parents often confuse them.

  • The working grade is where the student is now, based on recent classwork or assessments. It moves week to week.

  • The predicted grade is the teacher's forecast for the final GCSE. It is informed by mocks, effort, and pace, and updates through the year.

  • The challenge or target grade is what the school thinks the student should be aiming for. This is often set from prior attainment data at Year 6 and does not always match what the student is genuinely capable of.

The most useful signal is the gap between working and predicted, and whether that gap is closing or widening across reports. A working grade of 5 with a predicted 7 is a promising trajectory. A working grade of 5 with a predicted 5 has flatlined and needs a change of approach.

If the target grade is significantly below what your child is capable of, that is worth a conversation with the school. Target grades are floors, not ceilings.

A GCSE grade is a signal, not a verdict.

It tells you where a student is on a specific set of papers at a specific point in time.

But knowing what a grade means is only useful if it is paired with a clear view of what is causing the current result and what can be moved with focused work. That is where most parents want, and rarely get, an honest picture: not the grade itself, but the specific gaps behind it and the specific technique errors leaving marks on the table.
