The instinct is usually to do something immediately, and there is some sense in that. A few of the options have short deadlines. But most of the important decisions benefit from a day or two of clear thinking, and from knowing what the choices actually are before committing to one.

This article is that map. It is written for parents of students whose results have disappointed, whether that means a missed grade 4, a narrowly missed 6 that a sixth form asked for, or a set of solid grades that still fell short of a target.

The options are the same in each case. The right choice is not.

First, Work Out Which Kind of Disappointing It Is

Before comparing routes, be precise about the problem. Three situations come up far more often than any others, and they lead to different decisions.

  • The near miss. A grade sits one or two marks under a boundary, and the higher grade was needed for a course, a sixth form place or a set of A-level choices. This is the situation where challenging the grade is most worth considering.

  • The missed grade 4. In England, students who do not achieve at least a grade 4 in maths or English must continue studying the subject alongside whatever they do next. This is the outcome with the longest tail and the one where the resit decision cannot be avoided, only planned well or badly.

  • The gap to the target. The grades are passes, perhaps good passes, but a student who expected 7s came home with 5s and 6s. Nothing needs challenging or resitting. The question is what happens to those gaps once A-level study begins, because A-level maths and science build directly on the GCSE content that was not fully secured.

Most families are dealing with one of these, and occasionally two at once. Name which one applies before reading on, because the rest of the article is a great deal shorter once you have.

Option One: A Review of Marking

A review of marking, sometimes still called a "remark" (and technically RoMM - Review of Marking and Moderation), asks the exam board to check that the paper was marked correctly and that the marks were added up properly. It is requested through the school, not by the parent directly, and it must be requested within a few weeks of results day. The school will know this year's date.

It is worth requesting in a narrow set of circumstances. The grade sits close to a boundary, the subject is one where marking involves judgement rather than a single correct answer, and the outcome matters for a specific place or course. In maths, where marking is mostly objective, reviews change grades less often than parents hope. In the written sections of science papers, particularly six-mark extended responses, there is more scope.

Two things to know before requesting one. Marks can go down as well as up, although this is uncommon. And if the review does not change the grade, the fee is usually charged, so it is a decision to make on evidence rather than on hope.

Where a sixth form or college place depends on the outcome, ask the school about a priority review. These are turned around faster for exactly that reason.

A review of marking corrects a marking error. It does not correct a revision problem. If the grade reflects what the student actually knew on the day, the answer sits in one of the other three options.

Option Two: The Resit

Every GCSE can be resat, but the timing differs by subject. Maths and English Language have a November series, which means a student who narrowly missed a grade 4 in the summer can retake within a few months. Every other subject, including the sciences, is resat in the following summer alongside whatever the student is studying by then.

For the missed grade 4 in maths, the resit is not optional in practice, so the useful question is how to make it count. The honest answer is that a resit entered on the same preparation is likely to produce the same result. The student has already sat this paper with that knowledge and that technique. Something has to change.

What tends to change the outcome is not more of the same revision. It is a proper diagnosis of where the marks went last time. On a maths paper that scored a grade 3, the marks are usually lost in a small number of repeatable places: working not shown on multi-step questions, a handful of foundation topics such as fractions and ratio that were never secured, and time spent on questions near the end that were never going to be answered. A resit plan built around those specific losses looks completely different from a plan that starts at chapter one.

For students choosing to resit a subject they passed, in order to raise a 5 to a 7 for instance, the calculation is different. The resit sits in the following summer alongside A-level work, and the extra load is real. It is worth doing when the higher grade unlocks something specific, such as a university course that asks for a particular GCSE grade. It is rarely worth doing simply to tidy up a transcript.


Option Three: Renegotiate the Next Step

Sixth forms and colleges publish entry requirements, and the results day version of those requirements is often more flexible than the printed one. A student who has met the overall bar but missed the grade in one subject, particularly by a narrow margin, is frequently offered a place with a condition attached or a conversation about alternative subjects.

The window for this is short. Places are confirmed in the days after results are published, and a family that waits a fortnight to make contact will find the flexibility has gone. Ring or email the admissions contact within the first few days, state the situation plainly, and ask what the options are.

If a specific A-level is no longer available because the GCSE grade was missed, the question becomes whether the same destination can be reached by a different route. A student who wanted A-level physics but missed the required maths grade might be offered physics on condition of a maths resit, or might be better served by a different combination altogether. Neither is a failure. Both are decisions to be made on what the student wants to do at eighteen, not on what feels least embarrassing this week.

The same logic applies to alternative qualifications. A T-level or a BTEC in a science subject is a legitimate route to a science degree for some students, and a better one than three A-levels for a student whose GCSE results suggest the exam-heavy A-level format is not playing to their strengths.

Option Four: Move On, and Repair the Gap Before It Grows

This is the option most often overlooked, because nothing about it feels urgent. The student has the grades to start their chosen course. The results were disappointing but not disqualifying. Everyone would prefer to draw a line and start fresh in September.

The difficulty is that A-level maths, physics and chemistry do not draw a line. They build directly on GCSE content, and a student who scraped a 6 by working around a weakness in algebra will meet that same weakness in the first term of A-level maths, now with harder material stacked on top of it.

A gap at GCSE does not close on its own at A-level. It compounds.

The fix is not dramatic. It is a short, targeted piece of work in the first term to identify which GCSE topics were never fully secured and repair them before the A-level course depends on them. For a student starting A-level maths off a grade 6, that usually means algebra, surds and indices, and quadratic methods. For A-level chemistry it means moles and the quantitative work. This is a few weeks of focused effort, not a year of extra lessons, and it is far cheaper than the alternative of discovering the gap in a January mock.

A Worked Example

Consider a student who has just received a 5 in Maths, a 6-6 in Combined Science, and 6s and 7s elsewhere. The sixth form wanted a 6 in maths for A-level physics, and the family has a place conditional on a conversation.

The paper is not near a boundary, so a review of marking is unlikely to help. A maths resit is possible the following summer but would run alongside three A-levels. The sixth form, contacted on the day after results, offers physics on condition that the student demonstrates progress in maths by the October half term.

The family gets the maths paper marked question by question. Fourteen marks were lost to working not shown on algebra and ratio questions, eight to two topics the student had never properly learnt, and six to arithmetic errors made in the final ten minutes. Over six weeks in September and October the work is on exactly those three things: working discipline, the two missing topics, and a checking routine.

By the half-term checkpoint the student is producing timed answers that would have scored a 6 on the summer paper, the sixth form is satisfied, and the algebra repair has quietly removed the biggest risk to the A-level physics course as well.

Nothing about that sequence required panic on results day. It required knowing the options, acting on the one with a deadline, and using the time that followed properly.

What Not to Do

A few responses feel natural in the week after results and reliably make things worse.

  • Deciding on results day. Beyond the deadline-driven actions, nothing needs to be settled that afternoon. A decision made in the first hour is usually made on emotion.

  • Re-entering a resit with no change in approach. The student, the syllabus and the revision method are the same. The result will be too.

  • Treating the grade as a statement about ability. A grade 5 in maths is a snapshot of technique and recall on one morning. Students hear "not a maths person" and believe it, and that belief costs more marks than any gap in the syllabus.

  • Starting A-level as if GCSE never happened. The gaps are still there. September is when they are cheapest to fix.

Disappointing results narrow the immediate options. They do not decide the outcome.

The families who handle this well tend to do the same few things. They identify which kind of disappointing result they are dealing with, act quickly on the parts that have deadlines, and then slow down for the decisions that do not. They get the paper marked properly rather than guessing at what went wrong. And they treat the gap as something to be repaired, not something to be ashamed of.

That last part matters most for the student. The grades on the slip are already fixed. What the student believes about themselves in the weeks that follow is still open, and it is the single biggest predictor of what the next set of results looks like.
